Release 7 (core code synchronicity with Us Too)
This release is largely due to upgrades to the Oronym Core code found here while writing Us Too in earnest. The file was spun off at the end of IFComp 2024, on October 13th. I saw something that'd be nice for UT, and in it went to the core file. I also ported WP stuff to the core. Most of this is just better help, but I also included a bonus point for saying you don't need the war pawn. That's the only new point. If you've played through before, there's only niceties and flavor text added.
My usual test scripts found odd bugs or quirks worth fixing beyond my original scope for this release. There are too many to list here, but WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) and Zarf's regtest.py script helped so I could make a minor fix and not worry about regressions.
The toughest part may've been adding the random dialogues. As fun as it is, it takes time to check that they make sense, and I can only say "friend 1 and friend 2 decide" so many times. Plus I am close to the memory limit for z8/zblorb files. I can still use memory economy, but then I can't see the rule where code went wrong. I do love making these small tweaks but when they start taking too much time, it's time to move on.
Nevertheless, I'm pleased how Us Too helped make Why Pout technically better, and vice versa.
Us Too is currently entered in IFComp 2025, and I'd encourage you to check out the other entries -- and vote for them too! (Fairly of course!) Don't worry if "I don't understand text adventures that well." Just enjoy what's enjoyable. We like having more people participate. Maybe you can even drop a few reviews. There's no certification needed.
I may have a final version of Why Pout if the Oronym Core changes add up. I will also add a reference to an EctoComp entry or two in the ABOUT or VERSIONS. But that's it. I need to move on.
Cribbed from my fixes.txt file:
9/8/2025 new release (7.00)
--testing for Us Too allowed me to fix lots of core issues/move code to core
--Eyes and War Pawn now have more detailed individual help explaining their mechanic
--Eyes have some bugfixes and upgrades e.g. they note if you eye something in THINK
--THINK now helps a bit more: 1. if you guess two words separately, it assumes you know the whole clue 2. more accurate use of once/now, with reference to where you use a command you figured when relevant
--War Pawn now has 3 uses and bonus point for ditching it correctly
--WAIT now gives silly response
--28 more dialogues (down from 56 last release, but still fun to add)
--TALK SKULL now has random dialogue
--player now gets more regular cues at the start (parser error, WAIT or blank command)
--general fun flavor text from notes
